I suddenly vanished

So, I stopped drawing and posting comics unexpectedly about a month ago (probably longer, I haven't bothered checking exhaustively). And I think I owe you some explanation as to why.

I have, for about a year and a half now, been struggling with Major Depressive Disorder. That is, depression. It's been...variably intense. I did not realize it at the time, but over the summer, it was growing steadily worse until semester started.

My condition began spiraling, I met with a few doctors, and was prescribed a medication. Medication had...mixed results at first, plenty of side-effects. Trying to stay on top of school at the same time didn't leave a whole lot of energy for EV.

It's been a pretty dramatic month-and-then-some.

Now, the medication (and my condition) have stabilized, and I'm feeling better than I have in weeks (and possibly months). But it's only been like that for a few days and I don't want to pile a lot on myself only to crash under the weight when I hit the next trough.

What does this mean for EV?

I will not be resuming the regular posting schedule until I know I'm stable. But, I do feel plenty good, and I have spare time and energy, so I will be drawing strips and posting them sporadically for the next little while.

Thanks for your understanding and all the encouragement you've given me. It means a lot.

I'll see you soon, but not strictly next week.

A post in honor of Robin Williams
~Riley

To our friend

I felt it necessary to pay my respects to the fallen giant.

I will miss you, Robin Williams. You have given me a great gift of laughter all throughout my life, and were one of my biggest inspirations to pay it forward. You are a hero of mine.

There's a saying. It's adapted from a quote from The Sandlot (which Williams was not in) but it's often attributed to the Legend of Zelda, which Robin Williams had a notorious fondness for, so I feel it appropriate.
Heroes fade, but Legends never die.
 Long live the legend.

Some news

First

So, remember how I fell behind on my posting?

Well, I've finished drawing all three of the ones I skipped. I posted the first of them yesterday -- I've got two more, but I'm not going to post them right away.

Instead I'M GOING TO HOLD THEM DEEP WITHIN MY SANCTUM, NEVER TO SEE THE LIGHT OF DAY WHILE YOU SQUIRM IN ANGUISH JUST TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS IN THEM!!!!

...until Monday, that is.

So, on Monday July 28, I'll publish EV # 105. On Wednesday July 30, I'll publish EV # 106. And, if all goes according to plan, EV # 107 will be finished by Friday so I'll be able to post that one then.

And from there on, I'll be officially caught up.

Let me warn you. It's going to be an intense week. There's a couple of feels.

Second

Salt Lake Comic Con 2014!

WOOT!

The convention will be at the Salt Palace in Salt Lake City, UT from September 4-6. I will be there all three days. I don't have a booth (as if), instead I will be wandering around, attending panels, and spending way too much money on stuff I don't need. Just like I have every time I've gone to Salt Lake Comic Con.

If any of my readers are planning on attending the convention, I WOULD LOVE TO MEET YOU!

I'd love to talk to you, I'd love to draw something for you (no joke, for free, something simple), I'd love to take photos with you or trade autographs. It would be awesome.

Send me an email! rileyhulick@gmail.com

You'll recognize me as thus:
  • On Thursday September 4, I will show up around 3:30 P.M., and stay for a few hours. I'll be dressed in comfortable* clothing, and have the delirious look of having come straight to the convention from school. This will serve all the more to my disadvantage, because the delirium will probably manifest itself in some kind of spending binge. Look for the guy carrying the tallest heap of plush dolls and t-shirts.
  • On Friday September 5, I will be there when the convention opens, and will wander around until I get tired or my feet fall off -- one or the other will probably happen around 5:00 PM. I'll be dressed in totally epic cosplay of Prince Zuko of the Fire Nation (Avatar: the Last Airbender). You can recognize me by this cartoon I'll be wearing on a t-shirt under the cosplay. Just ask every Zuko you meet to take off his/her overshirt to reveal what's beneath. It will go over really well.
  • On Saturday September 6, I will be there when the convention opens, and will likewise wander around until I run out of stamina points or mana. I'll be dressed as a wolf. A handsome wolf. I'll be with a large pack of fellow wolves. Just ask someone where the wild things wolves are.
*By "comfortable" I mean "not cosplay." Probably, I will do something fancy like a hat or nerdy tie.

If you were not planning on attending the convention but live in the area, tickets for a day are still a pretty reasonable price (especially for students and teens), and I recommend you check it out. It's really awesome.

Anyway, that's all the news for now. See you lot Monday with the new comic.

Sorry to have vanished

I didn't post anything on Friday, and did not post any explanation.

In effect, I somewhat vanished.

Sorry, didn't mean to. I've been somewhat under the weather for...seems like quite a while now. I'm trying to take it a little easy and as a result, EV got pushed off. My birthday is this week sometime (and thus so will be the third anniversary of this blog) so I may be a bit preoccupied and unable to post this past week's comic, and this upcoming comic within the necessary time.

But fear not, I will catch up.

One thing I've been paying a lot of attention to also has been my cosplay for the upcoming Salt Lake Comic Con (I would love to meet up with any of my readers; details later) but since the convention is still several weeks away, can take a break from that for a while to focus back on EV.

I just want you to know that I haven't forgotten about you, and this wasn't meant to be the beginning of some unannounced hiatus -- just a bit of accidental negligence. Again, sorry about that.

As an apology, please accept this beautiful (albeit lengthy) Ace Attorney themed occurrence from Tumblr.

Why break a perfectly good streak?

I mean, I haven't been on time in like a month.
It'd be bad mojo to break that now.

I've got today's comic penciled already, and since I don't work tomorrow (Happy Birthday, 'Murica!) I can have it up in the morning.

Meantime, enjoy this thing I drew when I found out that Rupert Grint is a brony.

Again with the lateness

Spent the evening with some friends.
Tomorrow's comic will be a bit late, I think.

Have something off my hard drive. I'm not even going to look, I'll just post it.

I expect it will be up before Sunday.

More fanart for Sandra and Woo

More fanart for the Sandra and Woo contest. I'm really into these contests lately.

If you don't get the joke, I don't blame you. It does require some context. Sandra (middle) is ordinarily a human, and Woo (left) a raccoon. Lilith (right) is a prodigy magician from Gaia, Sandra and Woo's sister webcomic. Although she doesn't often make this kind of error, it seems she's unintentionally switched these two friends' species.

Fanart for Sandra and Woo

Sandra and Woo is a wonderful webcomic (you can see it in the list on the right). Like xClassicalCatx, they are having a fanart contest, into the which I will be entering this. I plan on making more entries, but this was the first idea I had.

It is, of course, a thematic ripoff of that iconic Calvin and Hobbes painting.

My fanart for xClassicalCatx

xClassicalCatx is an amazing violist on YouTube. She's having a fanart contest, and I am entering this:

The title, "Cadecance", is a play on the words "candecence" which means 'glowing with white light' and "cadence" which is a musical concept used at the end of a phrase.

So, yeah. That's cool.

I commissioned a drawing!

I had a very talented artist named Llacky draw this for me. Look at how cute they are!

Why did I commission a piece, rather than just draw one myself?

  • I consider Llacky to be more skilled than myself, and therefore thought it would be nice to see her take on my characters.
  • I feel awkward hanging my own artwork on my bedroom walls, but not this! I am EV's number one fan, and I just want to show my support.
  • I got a new job (started working there today), and now I've deluded myself into thinking I'm rich or something.
  • Llacky deserves it. I really like her artwork.
  • I couldn't think of any My Little Pony themed artwork I wanted to see.
Besides, just look at this piece. They're so adorable, and even poor naked Fenic looks approachable and friendly. I do not regret this.

Have some Pony fanart!

I saw a humanized version of Button Mash by Rexman on a pony-themed Facebook page I'm fond of. The admin suggested that he wanted to see Sweetie Belle in the same style. One thing led to another, and this happened.

I've never drawn humanized ponies before, so far I've focused my efforts on ponifying humans. It was good fun and I thought you'd enjoy it while we wait for the next actual comic.

Official reboot tomorrow.

Hey everyone.

As you can see, the website looks a little different. The new banner is in place now, we're running Project Wonderful ads, and a lot of other things have been cleaned up.

I haven't yet finished the promotional materials I had hoped to be able to produce, and I have no buffer saved up but I didn't want to push this off another week.

I am still getting it done, but I expect to have a new comic up on the site tomorrow, and every Friday after that for (approximately) the next six months.

Here's a peek of tomorrow's.

I hope to have this a little more streamlined by tomorrow.

Thursday, April 17, 2014

So, what's going to happen?

First let me tell you, with unambiguous clarity, one thing that is not going to happen.

EV is not going to stop where it currently is. I'm planning on about another six months, with a regular weekly update schedule.

When does that begin?

Well, I'm not sure. See, drawing comics takes a while. I'm not particularly busy at the moment, but I hope to have something of a buffer saved up before I begin posting anything -- have a few comics in reserve so I'm not scrambling right before deadlines (This is something most webcartoonists do, and something I've never been able to accomplish myself. I'm a big boy now, though, I think I can handle it). And, even though I've written out the scripts for several comics, I haven't so much as sketched one out yet.

That would be because I'm trying to draw a new banner for the website.

Yeah, I'm going to do some rebranding, some promotion, and a little tidying up around here before I begin posting again -- because after I start posting, I'm sure to have no time to do that other maintenance work.

ETA? Possibly next week. Possibly.

This might be a poor time to gauge how long it will take to accomplish this stuff because I'll be at Salt Lake Comic Con tomorrow (if you happen to be there, I'll be dressed as Edward Elric, will be attending a number of the writing panels, and would love to meet you). I was supposed to make some preparations today, but I've been procrastinating and now I feel like I can't manage my time at all. :(

Self-pity aside, here's what needs to happen short term before EV will be up and running:

  • I need to finish drawing, inking, coloring, and editing a new banner for this website.
  • I need to design, draw, ink, color, and implement some new ads promoting EV to the internet.
  • I need to draw and ink at least the next four installments of EV.
(EDIT: I also want to create a new favicon, profile picture for the Facebook page, and less-elaborate banner for the Facebook page, as well as rearrange a few things on the site to make it less cluttered.)

And that sounds like about a week (or two).

I will have a once-a-week upload schedule. I'm not using anything automated (still) but right now, I think I will post new comics on Friday mornings around 8 AM Mountain Time.

I hope you're not too terribly annoyed that I'm putting this much time into the new website banner. These next few months will be something of a new era for EV and will definitely mark the ending of the story. (Even if I find I have more time after that for comics, I will be starting something new -- don't get too excited, though, I really don't know what's going to happen in six months' time). This will probably be the last chance I have to make a new banner for EV, and I think it deserves one.

Besides, I resized the website since making the last banner, so it looks weird. Plus, I've edited it a few times, and honestly my art style has changed a little.

Why am I defending myself here? I'm the artist here. Banner. Then comics.
